Islington Delivery Office

Working alongside their long term client, Royal Mail Group, Watson Batty Architects provided a Delivery Office in the heart of London. Providing 1,745 sq.m. of space for Royal Mail, the Islington Delivery Office allows the group to serve 74 postal routes in the Islington postcode.

Overlooking the Grand Union Canal the site was heavily constrained in size and had additional complications including an Underground line running below the site. Construction works on the site were challenging and required piling against the canal wall, close to the underground line. Watson Batty Architects worked with the contractor Galliford Try to establish a logistics plan which created a safe working site, ensuring disruption to local residents and house boat occupants was kept to a minimum.

Replacing an outdated facility, the building includes the latest ‘Customer and You’ standards providing excellent facilities for both customers and staff which Royal Mail has committed to improving across the estate.

Several sustainable features form part of the building including a Brown Roof which encourages bio diversity in the heart of the city, Solar Panels and LED Lighting which reduces electrical energy use. The project achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating due to its sustainable credentials.
