Watson Batty Architects have designed the new South Shields Delivery Office which replaces the current city centre site that will be demolished to make way for a new transport interchange as part of South Shields councils 365 regeneration plan.
66 postal routes will be relocated to the new Delivery Office as part of the project. The Delivery Office sorts mail into the individual routes the post workers deliver via each day.
Located in an area of the town centre where extensive regeneration is due to take place, the previous South Shields Delivery Office site was not fit for purpose. Including the latest ‘Customer and You’ standards, this new Delivery Office will provide enhanced facilities for both Customers and staff.
To ensure the councils 365 regeneration plan could commence without delay, the project was built to a strict timeframe to achieve the programme required by the council. Watson Batty Architects worked with the contractor to ensure the programme was maintained, key planning conditions were discharged and to consider alternative methods of construction.
The site layout is designed so as to consider the high levels of health and safety required by Royal Mail. Customers and staff are clearly separated and the public approach to the mail collection point improved. The project has a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ with photovoltaics used on the roof and a jetwash system installed that reclaims 99% of the water used.
