A transparent and welcoming environment for the community

The local operating Trust wanted to re-invent their delivery of leisure facilities to the community. This new leisure centre instigated an exciting mixed-use development on the site, which now includes an additional sports hub, a football pitch, a YMCA, and a 115-units sheltered housing development.

Our design accommodated these ‘imaginary’ constraints to ensure the site could develop around our completed building in the future.

Aimed at increasing local community participation in a wide variety of indoor sport and leisure activities, our brief was to create a transparent and welcoming environment. Access to the primary facilities is from a central, open concourse that is easily and securely supervised from the main reception area. Efficient central circulation within the airy atrium helps visitors navigate around the building more easily.

Accommodation includes a six-lane 25m main pool, 8.5 x 20m teaching pool, a four-court sports hall, a 200-station fitness suite, two squash courts with moveable wall, two exercise studios, and ancillary accommodation.
