The previous South Shields Delivery Office was unfit for purpose and occupied an area that fell under the realm of the South Shields 365 Regeneration – a major masterplan to transform disused docks and brownfield land creating a new retail quarter to the town and improvements to the Metro and bus stations.
Royal Mail decided to relocate and become a flagship tenant on an industrial estate one mile south. This enabled the council to clear the old site and progress their masterplan.
Construction adhered to a strict timeframe to align with the council’s programme. We worked closely with the contractor to quickly discharge planning conditions and meet key dates. We helped assess the viability of using alternative methods of construction which was ultimately unsuitable due to size limitations.
The new delivery office has achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, using roof photovoltaics and a vehicle jetwash system that reclaims 99% of its water.
