SEN school achieves planning

We’re delighted that another of our education schemes has achieved planning.

River Tees Academy Grangetown will be a highly specialised Special Education Needs School in Grangetown. The school will take in students ranging in age from 5-18 year olds across Four Tees Valley Local Authorities (Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington), making it a vital part of the SEN provision for the NE of England. The school will also be Net-Zero Carbon in operation.

Internally, the finish will be robust but caring, with excellent passive supervision and a high number of sensory and wellbeing spaces to support the specialist needs of the pupils. Externally, brick and cladding give a nod to the area’s industrial past, providing a resilient and welcoming facade. The roof features a ‘Bio Solar’ Roof which combines a green roof with Solar Photovoltaic panels. Generous play and sports areas for age groups will ensure pupils’ well-being, including outdoor areas for a Forest School, Horticulture and Science, and Environmental studies.

Prior to submitting planning, we worked closely with the Department for Education and River Tees Multi-Academy Trust in a 7 week process of Client Engagement Meetings to walk the users through a ‘day in the life’ of every aspect of the new school. This ensured that the design fulfilled the needs of the end-users and pupils, and met the Academy Trust’s core values of Currency, Character, and Community. We look forward to the project moving onto site later this year with Adept Consulting Engineers Ltd Ridge and Partners LLP Plincke Landscape, and Main Contractor ISG.
