St Marys RC Primary School, Malton

WBA acted as Principal Designer and supported the main contractor throughout RIBA stages 4-5 for the expansion works at St Mary’s RC Primary School in Malton.

Complementing the existing school estate, the new-build standalone annex building expands the school’s intake from a 0.5 form entry to a 1FE as of September 2018, catering to the town’s requirements.

Part of the brief set by the client was to enable future expansion and through utilizing our strong knowledge base within the sector, this was successfully achieved. 4 additional classrooms were provided by coordinating with the wider design team an expansion design which allowed the single storey block to be built up to a two storey building.

External timber cladding was selected which will soften and grey over time to sit in harmony with the surrounding semi-rural context.

The use of coloured panels derived from the school’s logo provide a playful element whilst giving the building an identity. The layout of the new building has been designed with accommodation accessed via a circulation crucifix. The new accommodation includes classrooms, a food/science/DT room, a Chapel, a Hall & other smaller ancillary spaces. External landscaping also formed part of the works.
