Nuffield Health Care Home

Maximising design within spatial limits

Nuffield Health asked us to review the development potential for a care home on the site adjoining their existing hospital facility on Rykneld Road in Derby.

Existing site constraints were a key consideration in the design response.

The proposal included a purpose-built, two-storey building to be set within beautifully landscaped grounds. Accessed from the existing road, the main entrance and communal day-care facilities were positioned centrally within the plan, with separate wings of accommodation located to either side.

Existing site constraints were a key consideration in the design response and impacted plan layout and scale. Boundary distances, tree protection zones and extensive underground storm water drainage systems all dictated the footprint of the building and required detailed assessment as part of the planning process. To reduce the scale of the overall building mass, integral gable features offered a lower and varied ridge line. The facade used a mixed palette of brick with vertical rendered panels. Mature landscaping on the perimeter of the site would be supplemented by a detailed landscaping proposal to provide an attractive external environment.
