NHS Digital – Trevelyan Square & Whitehall II

Watson Batty Architects were appointed to review NHS Digitals office estate in Leeds City Centre. Existing floor layouts in two buildings were updated to accommodate in excess of 370 desk positions in addition to executive offices, ancillary accommodation and breakout spaces.

A space utilisation exercise was undertaken and alternative desking and furniture systems assessed and reviewed to ensure layout flexibility and acoustic privacy was provided.

Existing walls and ceilings were removed and updated with new partitions and finishes, along with mechanical and electrical service alterations. The resulting new office space was achieved within a fast track timescale and delivered alongside tight financial constraints, a key factor for this project to ensure ongoing operational efficiency for the client.

NHS Digital, a national information and technology provider for the health and care system, is a team of information analysts and technology and project management experts. Their vision is to harness the power of information and technology to make health and care better. They create, deliver and manage the crucial digital systems, services, products and standards upon which health and care professionals depend.

To facilitate the above delivery, Watson Batty Architects undertook the design and delivery of two office refurbishment projects. The principles where to enable the staff to interact on a regular basis, provide a number of executive offices along with a mix of established desking positions and hot desks and install a variety of strategically positioned breakout spaces. Colour coding across both the carpet and wall finishes highlights the level of activity, from quiet to loud, of each zone.

Designing an adaptable layout to allow for the continually changing work patterns of the NHS Digital team was fundamental to this project and required flexibility along with the ability to re configure workstation layouts. Alongside the desking alterations, new floor and ceiling finishes, new ancillary kitchen and shower accommodation was installed as part of the refurbishment, to provide an environment conducive to the health and wellbeing of the staff.
