After a long protracted planning process, WBA are delighted to announce that expansion plans at St Mary’s primary school in Malton, North Yorkshire have been granted planning permission by Ryedale district council.
The monolithic arrangement of ‘building blocks’ integrate a single storey black brick box and a double storey timber cladded box which will soften and grey over time to sit subtly with the surrounding rural context. The use of coloured panels derived from the schools logo will provide a playful element whilst giving the building an identity.
The layout of the new standalone building has been designed with accommodation accessed via a circulation crucifix. The new accommodation includes classrooms, a food / science / DT room, a Chapel, a Hall & other smaller ancillary spaces.
Utilizing our strong knowledge base within the sector, part of the brief set by the client was to enable future expansion. We have achieved this by coordinating with the wider design team, an expansion design which allows the single storey block, to be built up to a two storey building, potentially providing 4 additional classrooms.
Externally the landscaping has been arranged so that the school benefit from a new staff car park, which will release the existing car park over for visitors parking. A pond, which is linked into the sustainable rain water drainage solution, and will provide the school with educational opportunities. Existing playing fields will be enhanced to meet Sport England recommendations.
Construction work has started in earnest with a completion target of March 2019
