Watson Batty Architects have been the Lead Architect at York St John University since 2010, supporting the Estates Department on over 20 different initiatives including the 4 phase redevelopment of the sports pitches on Haxby Road in York. The former Rowntree’s playing fields are steeped in 100 years of sporting history, and were purchased by the university for the development of their academic and social sporting offer in 2012. The first 2 phases included additional track and field areas, together with 2 new all-weather floodlit artificial pitches, outdoor netball and tennis courts with supporting infrastructure and parking facilities.
2016 has seen the start of the next phase of development; a new two storey pavilion, including changing facilities, strength and conditioning suite, social learning areas and an indoor five court sports hall. We have been working with the university since 2013 and are now novated to Triton Construction, appointed under a Design and Build contract to deliver the new £3m facility which is due to be completed by October 2016. The scheme will add to the significant investment the university has made over the last 10 years, more recently in student facing facilities. The new pavilion will be part of the strategy to enhance the student experience and support the continuing growth in student numbers and popularly of the university.
