“At its heart, architecture is about improvement through creativity, and that’s why it can’t stand still.”

“With a wealth of experience (over 25 years), it’s safe to say that I’ve handled a wide variety of projects – and some pretty complex ones too. But probably the most important thing I’ve learnt is that good relationships make successful projects. Understanding and upholding my clients’ needs and visions is paramount.

Our industry is ever-evolving, and ensuring the company’s continual development is crucial. To that end, each director takes on additional internal management roles. I’m responsible for marketing and the developing the Watson Batty brand, focusing on defining and communicating our growing offer. I also look after the resourcing and recruitment of our technical staff – the backbone of the firm.

In a quarter of a century, I’ve seen my profession transformed by innovations in design and a turnaround in our attitude towards sustainability. If we’re to rise to the modern world’s challenges, we have to grasp these changes and find ways of implementing new thinking and new technologies into our working processes. I also believe, that developing young talent is vital. As an external examiner at University of Huddersfield, I have a glimpse of the future.”
