York St John University, Fountains Learning Centre

A library for the 21st century

We were appointed by York St John University to provide design assistance on a ambitious £1.1m project to refurbish and reorder their Fountains Library.

The first part of our commission involved a wide-ranging remit of services that encompassed a comprehensive analysis of the internal management and operation of the existing library. Driving this exercise was the integration of IT services within the physical space. In response to our initial research, the design solution reinvents the traditional library model. We opened up the ground floor of the building, to provide a social learning space, a shared office space for staff. And a range of spaces was created across the other floors, to reflect modern personal and group learning styles.

The design solution reinvents the traditional library model.

To deliver a beautifully functioning and inspiring space, an important aspect of our role was the integration of interior elements, including furniture, IT and data, graphics, material finishes and way-finding.

The project was completed and opened on time and on budget.
