Working together with our long term client the latest key Royal Mail Project in Islington in the heart of London is now open. The recently completed new build Delivery Office provides 1,745 sqm of space for Royal Mail, allowing the group to serve 74no postal routes in the Islington postcode.
The site overlooks the Grand Union Canal and was heavily constrained in size with the building filling the site. Additional complications below ground included an underground line running below part of the site. During construction works included piling against the canal wall, close to the underground line. Watson Batty Architects worked with the contractor Galliford Try to establish a logistics plan which created a safe working site and ensured disruption to local residents and house boat occupants was kept to a minimum.
The building replaces an outdated older facility and includes the latest Customer and You standards providing excellent facilities for both customers and staff which Royal Mail has committed to improving across the estate.
Several sustainable features form part of the building including a Brown Roof which encourages bio diversity in the heart of the city, Solar Panels and LED Lighting which reduces electrical energy use. The project achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating due to its sustainable credentials.
